Abstract
Knowledge of economy of High Performance Concrete (HPC) is vital to the
application of these materials in practice. The high performance concrete may be
obtained by different combinations of aggregate types, chemical and mineral
admixtures. In addition, steel fibres may be used to enhance toughness and ductility.
This range of approaches leads to different coefficients of costs values and extensive investigation is essential to provide the detailed information which is required to achieve least cost.
Therefore, in this paper, the effect of using silica fume (microsilica), fly ash, gravel,
dolomite, ordinary Portland cement, Sulphate resistance cement, Superfine cement
and various chemical admixtures in different combinations is examined to get high
performance concrete by least cost. Associated differences in the rate of strength
development (100 - 140 MPa) and (100-150mm) slump may also have to be taken
into consideration to achieve HPC by least cost.
The investigation explains that, choice of economic mixes achieve the required
performance; will play an important role in concrete economy. It’s found that, there
are many mixes realize the required strength and slump, but these mixes are not
necessarily economic mixes. Generally, on average, the cost of normal, medium,
high, very high and ultra high strength concrete mixes is found to be equal 269.85LE, 323.57LE, 397.89LE, 448.32LE and 518.11LE respectively (US $ = 5.5 LE). Thus the strength increase from category to the other would be adopted by increasing the rate of cost by a percentage 20%, 47%, 66% and 92% respectively.
This paper reports experimental and analytical works determining the guidelines to
get high performance concrete mixes by least costs and important recommendations
are drawn.
