| Abstract | A great amount of attention has been focused on durability aspects in the light of recent experiences in several Asian countries. This is specially important in a developing country where resources are scarce and savings achieved in initial and life cycle costs of structures would enable the country to have more funds available to build, maintain and operate more projects. With this in view, several national and international experts have interacted for suggesting specifIC and practical measures which will ensure economic construction ofdurable structures which will have a minimum life of 100 years. While suggesting these measures, care has been taken to adapt the same to the Asian construction environment. Although brief, the measures outlined in the following pages are considered adequate to achieve safety and durability at minimum cost. This has been achieved by concentrating on key issues and emphasizing practical solutions applicable in the most common circumstances. The theoretical aspects of durability, and the lessons leamt from past experience, which have been the basis of the recommendations given here, are not presented, for which reference can be made to specialist literature.
